Rest assured, we have not heard the end of this...
UPDATE: NYU’s controversial “Ransom Notes” campaign has now been officially halted. Huge thanks and congratulations are in order, for Ari Ne’eman and everyone at ASAN, and for everyone in the broader disability, self-advocacy, and ‘neurodiversity’ communities who pulled together to convince NYU to rethink their approach. Still, there are crucial aspects of our message that have simply not been heard. This must change …

In the mean time, here's a point-blank question for the exalted Dr. Harold Koplewicz and other esteemed oracles of psychiatric wisdom at New York University:

IS the systematic dissemination and reinforcement, intentional or otherwise, of pervasive social prejudice genuinely conducive to long-term mental health for any segment of society?

Please register your responses now ... and don't forget to ask yourself that question again, before launching your next "awareness" campaign.

That is all.

Somewhat late, I know, but I hadn't heard of this campaign, and it's interesting to me as a recovering bulimic and depressive. I'm here via [info]elfwreck's journal and am going to friend you; the journals I actually post on are on LJ and DJ under the same username, should you want to pay a visit (the DJ one is almost entirely friends-locked, though.)

I was on LJ for a few years, but finally dumped my account about two months ago. Their corporate-BS and nanny-state histrionics just got to be more than I could stomach. I thought about setting up with DJ, but they don't allow walk-ons anymore. S'okay. Things are still a bit slow here, but I can never quite get it out of first gear anyway, so that suits me fine.

Welcome aboard. :-)

discrimination and prejudice

That jerk-face has no clue. Autism is neurological. (Actually I think some of the so-called psych disorders are neuro too but that's another rant).

Just like the nami mommy campaign against "stigma" those things hurt far more than they help. I don't even want to get started on the A-squeaks people.

It is not stigma, it is discrimination and prejudice and hatred and ignorance.

Those things are unacceptable to me today.
The nami mommies and A-squeaks and Koplewicz can go stick it.

"It is not stigma, it is discrimination and prejudice and hatred and ignorance."

And don't forget exploitation.

But ignorance, of course, is the sine qua non, the womb that gives illegitimate birth to the whole sorry spectacle. Without the cultural ubiquity of ignorance, Assholedom Speaks would have no-one to exploit, and Old Man Wright would be clutching a tin cup on a street-corner somewhere.
